Fighting Back

Creditcard lockEvery month, Secure Science discovers three million compromised login credentials on anything needing a username and password on the Internet, such as banks and online email accounts. It also intercepts 250,000 stolen credit cards.

Fortunately, many companies are working on innovative technologies to prevent fraud. Below are some of the more interesting ones:

Intelligent redaction. Xerox introduced a software solution that hides sensitive data within a document. Users simply identify any confidential information they need protected and the software automatically redacts all references to it within the document. Then after the user classifies the information, it will be automatically redacted whenever it appears in other documents.

Incognito CD. Wherever you use the Internet, you leave digital fingerprints. The Incognito CD, which can also be loaded on a USB drive, allows users to access the Internet anonymously nearly anywhere using a bootable device that's preconfigured with Internet applications such as Firefox, IRC, and email but doesn't leave a digital trail of cookie crumbs.

New patent enhances camouflage

Arcot is also busy at work with new technologies to shut hackers down. On February 5, Arcot was awarded a new patent that extends cryptographic camouflage, a technology that camouflages good keys by hiding them amongst countless placeboes. As soon as a hacker moves in to find the needle in the haystack, the server immediately blocks the account before damage is done.

Geoffrey Hird

"The new patent covers a different way to use cryptographic camouflage technology within authentication systems," said Geoffrey Hird, the inventor/author of the new patent and chief scientist for Arcot. "It broadens its use to many more types of keys, not just RSA private keys, which could potentially lead to new markets."

Cryptographic camouflage also protects the ArcotID, a software smartcard that transparently fraud-proofs the login process without expensive hardware, rapidly scales to millions of users and runs on a variety of platforms.
