Relay Judging

What is CTS Relay Judging? It is a method to measure the time between when the swimmer in the water finishes and when the next swimmer leaves the starting blocks. In a relay event, one swimmer must finish before the next swimmer leaves the starting blocks.

How does CTS measure this time? One time is recorded by the touch pad as the swimmer in the water touches it (finishes). The second time is from the Relay Judging Platform (RJP) or the A button (remember that the A button is used for relay judging during splits and is used as a backup time at the finish). The Sys5 and Sys6 can measure this time difference.

Using the A button

If you are using the A buttons, make sure you go into the Sys5 or Sys6 setup and make the necessary changes.

  • Sys5 – Go to Setup/Hardware and press #4 until it says "Relay Judging using buttons."
  • Sys6 – Go to Setup/Hardware and press #4 (Near end) and/or press #5 (Far end) and select "Relay Judging using buttons."

Using RJPs

If you are using the Relay Judging Platforms, make sure you go into the Sys5 or Sys6 setup and make the necessary changes.

  • Sys5 – Go to Setup/Hardware and press #4 until it says "Relay Judging using Platforms."
  • Sys6 – Go to Setup/Hardware and press #4 (Near end) and/or press #5 (Far end) and select "Relay Judging using platforms."

If you are using a Sys6, you may want to set the "Relay Judging Interval." This feature is used to set the "window" (the time before and after the touchpad hit) for the pad and RJP. The default setting is .75 seconds.

The "Relay Judging Interval" (only on the Sys6 Timer) is used to ensure that contact with the RJP by forces other than the swimmer leaving the starting blocks will not be recorded erroneously. This would include swimmers around the starting blocks who might (in their great excitement) hit the top of the starting block.

The greater the window, the better the chance of recording the time of a slow-starting swimmer, but also the greater the chance of detecting an input from an outside force other than the swimmer taking off. It is recommended to set the window at .75 seconds for better swimmers and 1.00 seconds for slower swimmers.

If you want to print the Relay Judging Summary, you will need to go into Setups/printer/ "store/print format" and select Relay Summary.
