Give Work Stress the Boot

Many business professionals say they experience immeasurable amounts of stress at work. After all, with constant increases in job responsibilities, longer hours and fears about downsizing, today's employees face an enormous amount of pressure in the workplace.

But all isn't lost! There are steps you can take to make your work life bearable and even enjoyable.

Panic Button

De-stress Yourself: The Art of Relaxing

Sometimes, the best way to deal with work chaos is to remove yourself from the pandemonium long enough to regain your composure. Think it's impossible to relax at work? Try some of these tips:

  • Take mini-breaks. Every hour or so get up and walk around or just stand up and stretch. This will give you time to re-charge, which will help you remain productive.
  • Don't forget to eat! Your brain can't function without food, so be sure to take a lunch break and eat small, healthy snacks throughout the day.
  • Accept that you're not perfect. Try not to be such a perfectionist at work. Realizing that everyone makes mistakes and no one is perfect will help you remove unnecessary pressure.
  • Ask for help. Don't be a control freak. When things get impossibly busy, delegate some of your projects to co-workers.
  • Take time for yourself. Of course you're going to be stressed if you allow work to rule your life. Take time to go out with friends, spend time with your family, and participate in hobbies and exercise.

Coping with Change

Because change in the workplace is inevitable, it is best to learn how to deal with change. Easier said than done, right? The following steps are helpful ways to deal with unexpected or unwanted changes at work:

  • Don't deny your feelings. It's okay to express disappointment, fear and sadness about workplace transformations. If you don't accept and share these feelings, you'll never be able to deal with the changes.
  • Manage your expectations. When you discover that changes are going to take place at work, don't assume that you won't be affected. You need to accept the fact that things won't be the same. You may even be asked to take on new responsibilities and/or give up old ones.
  • Let your boss know. If you've taken on more responsibilities as a result of changes at work, be sure to tell your supervisor. It's important that they are aware of your increased workload.
  • Stay positive. Although times of change can be scary, the best thing you can do is remain optimistic about the future.
  • Work efficiently. If your work duties have increased with the changes, take proactive steps to work more efficiently. That may include changing your work day so you can arrive at work earlier to focus on projects before everyone is in the office.

Time is on Your Side

Poor time management often leads to unnecessary stress at work. If you learn how to stay organized and prioritize tasks, you'll have a much happier work environment. The following are time management tips:

  • Keep a to-do list. You'll never remember everything you need to accomplish unless you write it down.
  • Plan ahead. Take time to organize and prioritize your projects.
  • Just say no to procrastination! It's easy to avoid working on a project that you're not especially thrilled about. The best way to deal with these situations is to break them down into sections and dedicate just 15 minutes at a time to each task. By working on it a little by little, you'll most likely develop more interest in the project and reach the finish line before you know it!
  • Determine when you're most productive. If you know you're a morning person, commit to working on high priority projects in the morning before you lose focus.

You can control many aspects of your life. And, with a little planning, flexibility and communication you can begin to distress your life--just be sure to reward yourself when you finish a project or reach a goal.
