How to Cure Your Work BoredomThere are a lot of ways to keep your physical self motivated, but what about mental motivation? How can you keep yourself happy and inspired at your job long-term? If you generally like your job, but just have slumps due to motivation, lack of challenges, etc., try these ideas to keep your mental energy up. Goals to a VisionSet specific goals for yourself, and make them big enough to really motivate you. For example, "get promoted in next 12 months" or "complete training course by September." Once you achieve a goal, set another one so you don't get bored. Reach for promotions, pay raises and increased responsibilities. Determine your vision and develop a strategy to get there. SuccessBreak down your goals into attainable milestones and you'll be fueled by successes along the way. When you get results from one step, you'll be motivated to reach for the next one. The BrainYou should constantly be learning, whether by reading books, listening to motivating stories on tape, attending continuing education seminars, or just chatting with smart coworkers who you respect and can learn from. Consider taking a public speaking course or organizational seminar. If you really want to branch out, take a class and pick up an entirely new skill, like Web design or accounting. By allowing yourself to continue to exercise your brain, you'll become a well-rounded and knowledgeable employee, which will benefit both you and your company. Not to mention having new and interesting topics to discuss. VolunteerGet yourself on a committee for a company or community program that interests you. Put the word out among your coworkers that you're available to help and are willing to participate in meetings that you normally wouldn't be invited to. Volunteering will give you opportunities to try new areas of interest. For example, if you work in the accounting department, you might want to volunteer for a marketing project. MentorIf your job is becoming dull, break the routine. Perhaps it's time to show someone else the ropes. Maybe a sharp assistant has shown interest in what you do. Become a mentor and you'll soon find that your interest in your job is renewed. Not only will you be doing great things for a less experienced coworker, but you'll be putting yourself in a supervisory role, which could lead to a promotion. CommunicateIt doesn't matter if you're feeling uninspired because you're overworked or because you're not being challenged. Whatever the reason, your boss needs to know. He or she will have no idea you're ready for more responsibilities unless you communicate. You should not approach the subject by telling your manager that you're bored out of your mind. Instead, show that you're willing to learn and are interested in taking on some new challenges. Managers appreciate when employees speak up and provide opportunities or solutions. Remember that it's common to become bored at a job and start wondering what else is out there. Many jobs will sound more exciting than the one you have because they're new. Let your wanderlust take over, but instead of moving on to another company, improve the position you're in. Your job is what you make of it! |
