The All-encompassing Technology Plan
These days, implementing a technology plan involves establishing one system throughout the entire organization. The days of each department having its own technology budget are diminishing.
Companies have placed a moratorium on independent technology budgets because systems must integrate across the board. For example, the marketing department may decide to use Excel® to keep track of finances, while the accounting department may use different software. Having both departments implement the same software ensures employees can communicate easier.
Technology planning saves money and can create the foundation for operating a successful business. Consider the following items when establishing a technology plan for your company:
- Customize for specific needs. It's important to design a plan that meets an organization's unique needs. Establish goals for the plan, and detail how it will further your company's overall mission. For example, think about what issues the business may have and how technology can help address them.
- Use technology to further the organization's mission. The technology planning procedure can provide a fresh perspective for a company. This can open up more ideas on how to operate an organization, especially when all the departments understand how the technology implementation process works.
- Save money. Although technology can prove costly, think of these expenses as an investment. In addition, having a clear plan will save money in the long run and ensure that everyone's efforts stay on budget.
- Use the plan as a guide. Go back and review the plan when it comes time to make additional technology buying decisions. This will ensure areas don't make unnecessary purchases or stray from the company's overall technology mission.
- Make staff time more effective. Putting effective technology systems in place can streamline the time staff spend on projects.
- Turn to the experts. There's no shame in calling technology experts to help build an effective organizational plan. Look under Computers-System Designers & Consultants in your local business listings or contact your Chamber of Commerce. Don't forget to ask the consulting company for references—and check them—before signing a contract.
Most importantly, set a timeline and plan when to implement the new technology. Assign responsibilities, communicate with the entire organization on the implementation strategy and evaluate progress. Taking time to develop a technology plan will help every department move forward with their plans in an integrated environment. |
