COS/QOS Boost VPNs to New Performance Levels

With their continued wide-spread use, virtual private networks (VPN) have become a standard in real-time applications using networks. From voice over IP (VoIP) to video conferencing, VPNs enable companies to participate in a global economy and spread facilities around the world.

With nearly every medium- and large-size businesses in the United States turning to IP VPNs in the next few years, companies need help to manage traffic and measure service quality. This is where Class of Service (CoS) and Quality of Service (QoS) come in.

CoS is a way to manage applications in a network by grouping similar types of traffic together. The service treats each application group as an individual class with its own level of service priority.

QoS, on the other hand, is a way to measure the transmission quality and service availability of a network, providing a quantifiable performance. A network's transmission quality is determined by packet delivery, latency and jitter.

With CoS/QoS, companies can now prioritize traffic as they converge and integrate voice, data and video onto a single network, while still measuring its transmission quality. These services allow for meshed architecture, scaleable growth and built-in security while improving productivity and profits. With companies everywhere looking to become more efficient at every turn, it's no wonder why demand continues to boom.
