The "Up" Side of Competition

Competition for voice T1 services has surged throughout the telecom industry in the past few years. As providers do more to attract the attention of new customers and try to maintain the ones they have, businesses are free to pick and choose deals that work to their advantage.

Telecom providers used to promote ISDN PRI as a premium service that was superior to digital trunks. While these two products are similar, each uses a different signaling protocol, and ISDN PRI offers a few additional features over digital trunks. Because of this, telecom providers were able to charge companies higher rates for PRI services.

Changing times

As both products became more widespread, telecom providers no longer touted a difference between the two. Most businesses simply want fast, convenient and reliable voice services; it doesn't matter to them if the service is PRI or digital trunks. This is why many telecom providers no longer provide separate PRI and digital trunk voice T1 services, instead offering a single voice T1 service.

What's in it for me?

Businesses that buy voice T1 services benefit from the mounting competition between telecom companies. Because providers now add more standard features to their voice T1 packages to set themselves apart from competitors, companies buying these services can find lower rates, additional features at no extra charge and simple, dependable services.

For example, the owner of a mid-sized accounting firm in Jacksonville, Fla., decided to buy voice T1 services so her employees and accountants can have private, secure telephone conversations with clients. Although she's heard about the subtle differences between PRI and digital trunk voice services, she simply wants convenient, reliable services.

As she contacts telecom providers about their voice packages, she realizes there's a lot of competition when it comes to attracting customers. Because of this, it's easy for her to find a telecom provider that offers the ideal services for her mid-sized company. The voice package she chooses includes a variety of standard features at reasonable rates. In addition, the flexibility of her telecom contract lets her upgrade her phone system in the future without having to sign a new contract.

Like many commodities, the increased competition in voice T1 services has forced telecom companies to differentiate through additional services. And customers are the ones coming out on top.
